WHAT IS THE MYO MUNCHEE?

A simple habit with long-term impact

The Myo Munchee is designed to encourage active chewing - a natural movement that helps support the muscles of the lips, face, and jaw.

In a world of soft foods and busy routines, many of us aren't getting the kind of chewing our development relies on. The Myo Munchee gives a simple, structured way to build that habit back in.

Inter-canine width measurement guide showing distance between canine teeth

To take the inter-canine width, measure the straight line distance between the top two pointy (canine) teeth, tip to tip.

Are you in-between sizes?

When in doubt, we recommend sizing down - a more manageable fit works more effectively, and it's the better call during growth and transition phases when children often fall between sizes.

A smaller size is also often the right choice if your child:

Is small for their age, or has a narrow palate, crowding, or a history of tongue-tie

Struggles to keep their lips together, drools, or has lower oral tone

Mouth breathes, is a picky eater, or has oral habits like thumb or dummy sucking

How to use your Myo Munchee

A few minutes a day - simple to build into your routine

Start with 2–3 minutes, 1–2 times daily

Gradually build up to 5–10 minutes over time

Place

Pop the Munchee between the teeth and let the lips rest gently together. No need to bite down hard - it should sit comfortably, not feel forced.

Place your Myo Munchee

Relax

Chew lightly and let the jaw do the work at its own pace. There's no right speed and no force needed. Slow, easy movements are exactly right.

Relax while using your Myo Munchee

Breathe

Keep breathing in and out through the nose the whole time. Stay relaxed and let the breath stay slow and steady.

FAQs

  • How to find the right size for a child?

For this age group, there are many things to think about when deciding which size Myo Munchee is right for a child. Factors like age and where they are developmentally will play a big part in the decision.

Is your child dealing with some dysfunction? Have they used a Myo Munchee before? What are the goals you want to achieve with the Myo Munchee?

The Myo Munchee JUNIOR is generally suitable for children aged 4–8 years old. But it's not just about their age. It's important to consider the child's inter-canine width measurement too. This is the distance between the two pointy teeth in the top row.

The Munchee JUNIOR is sized for an inter-canine width of 30–35mm. Use our Sizing Guide or watch our video on finding the right size for your child.

Children older than 4 years with an inter-canine width measurement of less than 30mm may be better suited to starting with a Myo Munchee MINI. Once they can maintain a good lip seal, breathing through their nose and controlling the saliva while chewing, they can progress to the Myo Munchee JUNIOR.

For children older than 8 years, or younger children with a larger jaw structure, it may be best to check in with a dental practitioner to determine the best size Myo Munchee. Please take a look at our Practitioner Directory to find someone in your area.

  • How can I encourage my child to use their Myo Munchee?

It simply comes down to repetition, positive encouragement, and frequent interactions every day — that's how people are finding success with their children. With luck, it then becomes a habit and second nature.

An easy way to incorporate the Myo Munchee into family life is to integrate it into the daily routine. Many parents only allow TV or gaming time when a Myo Munchee is in their child's mouth! Other parents have found success with combining Munchee time with bedtime stories, car travel, or bathtime.

Plus there's always modelling. If an older sibling or even you as a parent use a Myo Munchee (yes, we have Adult Myo Munchees too!), children will often happily engage with their own Myo Munchee too.

The Munchee Moves are a wonderful way for children to combine their Myo Munchee time with some movement — family fun for all! Try to ensure Munchee time is always fun, offered often but never forced.

  • How often should my child use it?

We usually recommend a 5-minute chew, twice a day, although this will vary depending on age, ability, level of dysfunction and goals. If your child is dealing with dysfunction, speak with your treating practitioner for guidance.

  • How do I clean and store the Myo Munchee?

The Myo Munchee is made of medical-grade silicone with little prongs inside the arches, which clean the teeth and gums but may also capture food.

After chewing, we recommend rinsing the Myo Munchee with fresh water. Then give it a good shake to get as much of the water off as possible, dry it off a little with a tissue, and store it in a location with good airflow to dry it out — just as you would a toothbrush.

For an extra clean, you can occasionally clean with bicarb soda, rinse very well, and then place in just-boiled water for one minute.
