Dr Kevin Bourke was a dentist in the rural town of Maitland NSW. He developed the largest dental practice outside of metropolitan Sydney, much of this centred on his revolutionary thinking about the function and development of jaws.
He viewed the teeth, jaws and face as symbiotic, interrelated structures, working with these principles to help many children develop what he coined “a good quality face”

Meet Dr Kevin Bourke
Creator of the Myo Munchee, 1924 – 2016
Dr Kevin Bourke was a renowned Australian dentist who spent more than 50 years treating thousands of men and women at his dental practice in the rural town of Maitland, New South Wales.
In 1967, he pioneered a new approach to oral health when he invented the ‘Chewer’. Originally designed to treat gum disease, Dr Bourke soon discovered that the act of chewing the device also helped reduce plaque and strengthen jaw muscles.
Dr Bourke’s approach to jaw development became so renowned that he ended up running the largest rural dental practice in NSW — all while presenting his findings at international dental conferences to share his vision for preventative oral health and facial development. He retired from his dentistry clinic in 2005.

Meet Dr Mary Bourke
Chiropractor and Myo Munchee CEO
In 2015, Dr Bourke passed the Myo Munchee torch to his daughter, Dr Mary Bourke. Mary was one of the very first children to ever use the ‘Chewer’ and has been a passionate advocate for chewing ever since.
With over 30 years in chiropractic practice, Mary believes in collaborating with other health practitioners to promote the benefits of chewing. Under her leadership, Myo Munchee has evolved into a global movement to improve oral health and development, ensuring Dr Kevin Bourke’s legacy continues to improve lives worldwide.

Chicago
We are currently working with Dr Kevin Boyd and a team from Chicago to explore the facial growth impacts of chewing a Myo Munchee and myofunctional therapy in children aged 4–5 years old.
Auckland
We are looking to undertake research using EEG brain mapping technology to document which areas of the brain are active when chewing a Myo Munchee. Eventually, we will look at what is happening in the brains of babies when they are transitioning from sucking to chewing.
