  • About the product

Myo Munchee Tween age guidelines: 8-14yrs & adults with narrow jaw structure

Myo Munchee Tween Inter-Canine width measurement: 33-37mm

Myo Munchee Tween is our latest addition to our chewing range to better accommodate the children from 8 years through to 12 years old or older children and adults with a smaller jaw structure.

We have included molar pads for a more comfortable fit, that can be removed if their 12 year old molars haven't come in and a tongue attractor to assist with correct tongue position.

It may also be the most suitable size for an older teenager who has crowding and low oral tone, low tongue posture and/or a history of lip/tongue tie.

Transition from Tween to Adult is usually between 12-14 years of age, however please consider age along with the inter-canine width measurement.

It is always best to consult with your practitioner on the right size munchee for you based on the outcomes you are working towards.

  • Sizing Guide

The Tween is generally for 8–14 year olds or adults with a narrow jaw structure but it’s important to consider age alongside the distance between the top pointy (canine) teeth. The Myo Munchee Tween is designed to fit an ‘inter-canine width’ of 33–37mm. Read our Sizing Guide.

A new oral routine to chew over

By their tweens, children have achieved most of their facial and airway growth, with more room for their tonsils and adenoids to function and their 12-year-old molars set to come through. It’s important to continue supporting jaw growth, muscle tone, and oral health at this stage.

Australian dentist Dr Kevin Bourke invented the Myo Munchee to promote orofacial exercise that may help improve the tone, strength and balance in the muscles of the lips, face, and jaws — which may in turn affect the way the jaws and teeth will grow together.

Why choose to actively chew?

Encouraging an adolescent to chew a Myo Munchee every day can help them establish good oral health habits that will serve them for life. Chewing can help to:

  • Balance jaw posture
  • Retrain mouth breathing
  • Stabilise and strengthen the lips, face, and jaws
  • Assist with self-regulation
  • Maintain oral tone and function
  • Clean the teeth and gums

A valuable support device for practitioners

The Myo Munchee Tween stands out as a crucial adjunct tool in orthodontic and myofunctional therapy programs and may be used to assist with the balance, function, and tone of the lips, face, and jaws. It can also be a great tool to retrain mouth breathing patterns and keep the oral posture active while spending hours on computers and other devices.

Just 5 minutes of chewing twice a day can assist with oral hygiene and facial growth and development.

FAQs

  • What is the difference between the Myo Munchee Tween and the Myo Munchee Junior or Adult?

Unlike the Myo Munchee Junior, the Myo Munchee Tween has longer arch forms which ensure there is space for the 12-year-old molars. Molar pads provide a more comfortable fit (and can be removed if the 12-year-old molars haven’t come in) while a tongue attractor encourages a correct tongue position.

The Myo Munchee Tween is sized between the Junior and the Adult to suit an inter-canine width of 33–37mm (the Junior fits a width of 30–35mm while the Adult is designed for 35–40mm).
  • What if a child is within a transition stage between a Myo Munchee Tween and a Myo Munchee Junior or Adult?

The transition from the Junior to the Tween is usually around 8 years old, while the transition from the Tween to the Myo Munchee Adult is usually between 12 and 14 years of age. However, please consider the age along with the inter-canine width measurement.

You can also use our Sizing Guide to determine the best Munchee or work with a practitioner to help you find the right size for a child’s needs. Please take a look at our Practitioner Directory to find someone in your area.
  • How to find the right size for a child?

The Munchee Tween is generally suitable for children aged 8–14 years old. But it’s not just about their age. It’s important to consider the child’s inter-canine width measurement too. This is the distance between the top two pointy teeth. The Myo Munchee Tween is sized for an inter-canine width of 33–37mm.

For this age group, many other factors may impact which size Myo Munchee is right for a child — things like age and where they are developmentally.

For example, if a child has a lot of crowding and the jaws are in very poor alignment, the Myo Munchee Junior may be a more suitable choice to allow the jaws time to adjust to Myo Munchee use.

It may also be best to start with the smaller-sized Junior if a child has low tone, is underdeveloped, or deals with oral sensory issues. They can progress to the Myo Munchee Tween as they become more comfortable.

On the other hand, the Myo Munchee Tween may also be the most suitable size for an older teenager who has crowding and low oral tone, low tongue posture, and/or a history of lip or tongue tie.

Use our Sizing Guide or watch our video on finding the right size for your child.

If in doubt, it is always best to start smaller and work your way up to the next size or find a Munchee Certified Practitioner who can recommend the best fit.
  • Can the Myo Munchee be used with braces?

The Myo Munchee is a great tool that can be used with braces, although it is best to use it passively with the braces as chewing may damage the Myo Munchee as well as displace the brackets.

However, it’s always best to discuss with your treating practitioner when and how to use the Munchee appropriately in conjunction with this or any other dental procedure.
  • How often should a child use the Munchee?

We usually recommend a 5-minute chew twice a day, although this will vary depending on age, ability, level of dysfunction and goals. If your child is dealing with dysfunction, speak with your treating practitioner for guidance.
